Q. I was wondering if you could tell me what muscles and joints are used whilst doing kicking, press-ups, shot putt and bench presses?

I was wondering if you could tell me what muscles and joints are used whilst doing kicking, press-ups, shot putt and bench presses?

This is an analysis of movement question that is designed to help you to identify muscles, joints and types of movement involved in sport. If we were to give you the answers we would not be helping you to analyse and to be able to answer a similar question in the exam. So, do the kicking action and check to see which joints are flexing or extending. Then feel the muscles that are working and find out their names. If you don't know the names of the muscles find a diagram on the net or in a book and consult that as you do the exercise. Then repeat for the other actions. You might not like this answer, but we are helping you to learn. Good luck.

Q. What happens to our hormonal system when we exercise?
19th January 2004

The adrenal gland produces adrenaline, which increases the heart rate. The thyroid gland produces thyroxin, which speeds up the use of oxygen and glucose to produce energy in the muscles. The pancreas produces insulin, which helps to balance blood sugar levels. Of course, they do this when we are not exercising but everything increases when we exercise.
Hope this helps.

Q. Can you please explain the long-term effects that playing regularly in a game of Hockey will have on the performer’s Respiratory System?

Increased vital capacity and increased ability to extract oxygen from air (oxygen uptake) are the two main effects.

Q. Please can you give me the definition of an antagonist and eccentric muscle movement?
15th January 2004

The antagonist is the muscle that relaxes when the prime mover contracts to produce movement. For example, when you do a pull up the biceps contracts, but the triceps has to relax to allow the movement. As you lower yourself from the pull up your biceps still contracts as it lengthens. This is an eccentric contraction. When you pull up, the biceps shortens as it
contracts - this is a concentric contraction.
OK?

Q. I need help with my college assignment please. I need to look at the comparison of the work done by each system (cardiovascular and respiratory) during anaerobic and aerobic exercise?

Is this GCSE work? If it is it's too complex and quite unnecessary. If it is for 'A' level you should know that we only write for GCSE. Here's a simple explanation of the main features.
Aerobic activity is at a level where your two systems increase their working rates to get enough oxygen to the working muscles and can continue for some considerable time. Anaerobic work means that your systems are working flat out, but still cannot get enough oxygen to the muscles. Lactic Acid builds up and the work rate has to reduce considerably after about 90 seconds. Then the systems continue to work at a high level in order to repay the oxygen debt. Maybe this helps a little? Good luck

Q. What are the long and short term effects of exercise on the body systems?
4th January 2004

This is a huge question and one that cannot be answered in full here. In short when we exercise our heart rate and breathing rate increase and our muscle temperature rises. In the long term our lung capacity increases, our ability to take in oxygen improves, our cardiac output increases and our muscles hypertrophy (get bigger). There is much more detail available if you look for it, and the effects depend on the type of exercise you do.
Hope this helps.
