I am doing a presentation on media spectacles and have decided to write about Dwayne Chambers being caught taking drugs. How do you think this has become a media spectacle, if indeed you think it has? If you do not believe that it is a spectacle please could you say why? Thank you.

I have to complete an essay on how spectators and players depend on each other and that’s only the first part of it. I then have to do a second essay on how spectators affect a sports person’s performance this is for my coursework so it needs to be good please can you help?

I can think of several very good reasons why the concept of sport and tobacco/smoking do not sit happily together.

Apart from the revenue that comes from sponsorship from a tobacco company, what other advantages are there?

You would need to research the amount of newspaper space and TV time that have been devoted to the issue before you can decide if it has become a spectacle. Media interest has been limited to a few days of news items and discussion, but only you can decide if it is a 'spectacle' based on your own criteria. Hope this helps

You need to think about how atmosphere is created by spectators. We often see 'big' football clubs lose in small grounds when they can't get motivated enough to perform well. BUT, spectators will not make a good atmosphere if their team is losing, or playing badly. In fact, if the team always loses or plays badly they will stop going to watch.

Spectators can affect performance by motivating players, as described above, but sometimes players are put off by spectators 'getting at' them so they are too tense to play well. Players can also become tense simply because of the huge crowd and the expectations that are placed on them. We call this being over-aroused, or anxious. The relationship between players and spectators is delicate, finely balanced and can work both ways.

These are questions that usually require a long answer, but here are a few pointers:

1. The institute helps companies to find suitable sports for sponsorship and makes the links between them. It also makes sure that the companies get a fair return on their sponsorship (see World of Sport Examined 2nd Edition p.239)

2. Sponsorship is an important source of income for many sports. The money can be used to run events, improve facilities, organise coaching schemes, and pay players. (WOSE 2nd Ed p.240)

3. They don't think that a proven dangerous activity (smoking) should be made to look glamorous by being linked to sport (WOSE 2nd Ed p.241)

4. It shows us what is available and it makes it look attractive so that we want to be a part of the sport. (p.246)

You're on to a loser in looking for advantages other than revenue. The European Union has voted to ban tobacco sponsorship of most sport by the end of this year and in all world sport by the end of 2003. So gaining sponsorship is short term - and in the eyes of most legislators it is a negative relationship. To be linked with tobacco is not a good idea for any sport these days.
