I am studying a First Diploma Sports Science course and I am stuck on a particular question and was wondering if you could answer it for me please? Describe the principles of personal hygiene in physical activity. Give ways in which you can reduce problems with the body through appropriate hygiene e.g. athletes foot and verrucas.
If you could help me out on this one it would be most appreciated.

Please could you help me?
Thanks.

Personal hygiene is the way you look after your body. To reduce problems check your feet every day. Wash them every day. Wear clean socks every day. Use your own towel and dry your feet well. If you have itchy or flaky skin use powder or athlete's foot cream. Treat a verruca early with Verrugon or Bazooka.
Hope this helps

In
the short term smoking increases carbon monoxide levels
in the blood and reduces oxygen carrying capacity - so
stamina is reduced. In the long term it has the same
effect, but also damages the lungs to reduce your ability
to take in air and extract oxygen. Your circulatory
system is also affected so that you cannot transport as
much oxygen in the blood (narrower arteries, increased
blood pressure etc). Of course, if you have lung cancer,
heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis etc you will not win
Olympic Gold either. Hope this helps

A
balanced diet should include the following food types -
carbohydrates, fats, protein, water, vitamins, minerals,
fibre. Fruit and vegetables would be considered to be examples
of foods that contain carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals
etc. Ok?

A net search for drug takers in sport will reveal a host
of sportsmen and women who have recently tested positive.
You should select appropriate examples. It is not always
clear how the athletes have benefited from drug use. Take
each case on its merits and make your own judgement. |

30th September 2003
Personal
Hygiene simply relates to the process of keeping yourself
clean. Regular washing of all areas of your body (skin,
hair, teeth, feet etc) and your clothes reduces bacteria,
prevents odour and minimises the risk of becoming infected
or of passing on infections. You will be sweaty after sport.
The heat and moisture produced are ideal breeding grounds
for bacteria. Showering and changing clothes after playing
sport is very important. |

Undereating
will lead to a loss of bodyweight. In some activities this
will reduce performance levels. Undereating will also reduce
energy reserves, so endurance events will be affected quite
badly. Loss of general energy from undereating will make
the athlete lethargic and will reduce performance in activities
requiring bursts of high energy e.g. games playing and
sprinting. So, all things considered undereating is not
good! Hope this helps. |
