I’m studying a National Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence. I’m in my second and final year of this course and in need of great help. I’m currently doing an assignment for one of the subjects known as "innovation for sport". For this module I have been asked to "explain the use of appropiate technological developments to aid performance in the sporting activity, squash". This question did not seem to be difficult at first but it is now, as you can see, causing a bit of a problem to me. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE could you help me with this question and supply me with some very useful and INCREDIBLY helpful answers to this question, but it must be based on squash?

What

I
am in the process of planning work for A2 Sport Studies. One
section look at the characteristics of amateur and professional
world games competitions and their structural organisation.
In the syllabus students are to know the fundamental differences
between to the structure and organisation of such events.
Can you suggest any good resources? For example how badminton/hockey
world championships differ from that of the football/rugby
world cup?
Many thanks.

I'm
taking GCSE PE and have been set an assignment to research
the following and was hoping you could help:
What technological developments have been made in sport in
terms of equipment and materials used?
What effect does this have on participation and performance
in different activities?
What improvements have been made in facilities e.g. safety
factors/teaching or training aids?
And finally, how has ICT been used to improve knowledge and
performance? |

Squash rackets and balls have changed in recent years. The bigger head provides a larger sweet spot and more power. The courts have been developed from glass to allow TV coverage which gives the game a bigger audience and more revenue. Squash shoes and clothing have developed to provide more grip, support and heat dissipation.Beyond this you need to add your own detail and examples. Good luck!

Think
about the use of video analysis, high tech. fitness equipment,
state-of-the-art treatment of injuries, computer based
tracking of fitness levels, Astroturf and indoor training
pitches and you are well on the way to a good answer.
Hope this helps

Hi
We are unable to be much help with this topic as it is someway
beyond the scope of GCSE PE. The kind of analysis that you
are looking for would, if it exists, be found in an A Level
text or related website. If you cannot find it through this
route you might visit the appropriate organisation websites
and conduct your own comparisons re. number of participants,
media attention, security considerations, sponsorship, budgets
and so on.
Hope this helps. Good luck

Hello
Well, firstly you need to get hold of a copy of "The
World of Sport Examined 2nd Edition" because that has
most of the information you need on pages 186-188. Copies
should be available in your school library or local library
if you don't use the in class. Place an order for one if it
is not on the shelf. Some websites will give you examples
of the way in which equipment aids performance. Try all of
the big clothing manufacturers (Nike, Adidas, Reebok etc.)
Also look at this site http://www.sti-sports.com/english/english.htm
for information about the effects of different surfaces on
performance. A search on the net under "ICT in Sport",
"Technology and Sport" etc should provide lots more
information.
Unfortunately we cannot respond here in the amount of detail
that you require.
Good luck

Q.
What part do you think the performer/athlete has had in changing
the world of sport?
20th September 2002
Hello
Pages 182-185 of The World of Sport Examined 2nd Edition contain
details of the changing role of performers over the last 150
years. The change from amateur athletes to professionals happened
as a result of many factors, but there is no doubt that, since
the rewards of success began to grow, the athletes began to
seek better ways to train (and to cheat) and this has changed
the world of sport. Drugs testing is part of the fabric of
sport and sport science is informing athletes and coaches
about everything from nutrition to training methods and psychology.
When sponsorship and media coverage brought more money into
sport, performers began to realise how marketable they were
and demanded their 'fair' share of the funds. Agents were
hired to work for the athletes and management companies started
to look for other sources of revenue for the athletes (personal
appearances, adverts etc). The scene is now quite complicated.
Do the athletes lead the way in developing the new technology
that they use and put their name to (shoes, rackets etc) or
are the sportswear and equipment manufacturers setting the
pace? Are the media creating the sporting superstars or are
world champion footballers really much 'better' than world
champion fencers or handball
players?
There is no doubt that some athletes have drawn attention
to themselves and their sport and that this has helped to
popularise their events, or activities - but they are only
playing one part in the global operation, that is competitive
sport.
