Welcome to Wellington Square from Nelson Thornes
The UK's favourite lower ability reading scheme
With over 10,000 schools in the UK choosing Wellington Square for their struggling readers, this scheme offers the broadest range of resources with a high interest level and low reading age.
Wellington Square widens your pupils' reading experience through imaginative and stimulating support material.
The scheme provides straight forward progression through all 5 levels of the scheme, from wordless picture books to storybooks with full text. Familiar characters and settings encourage and motivate your pupils.

Wellington Square Resources
Storybooks

Storybooks are available as Set A and as Set B. There are 6 storybooks in Set A at each level and they should be read in order, as the vocabulary and structures used are introduced and progress in a controlled manner. Set B readers can be read in any order and provide extension and further practice material. The Storybooks introduce and develop the characters in the Square and readers are made to feel part of a community. The Storybooks also raise PSHE discussion topics such as bullying and fear.

Non-fiction

The non-fiction books extend pupils' reading and writing experiences and cover key non-fiction genres; recount, report, explanation, persuasion, instruction and discussion. Each non-fiction book is linked to a Set A book and helps readers learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

Reinforcement Readers

Consisting of 20 reading books, with 4 at each level, the Reinforcement Readers extend the scheme across the levels and provide your pupils with further practice and consolidation before they move on.
Wellington Square Assessment Kit
The Assessment Kit is an invaluable resource which helps you to observe and analyse pupils' reading development. The Kit ties in perfectly with the Wellington Square scheme and has been designed specifically to help you make provision for your SEN pupils. It includes:
  • 10 new, carefully levelled titles to be used for assessment, which test general understanding of story structure.
  • The Teacher's Guide contains photocopiable running records and reading comprehension sheets
  • Advice for SEN support teachers and Learning Support Assistants.
